Ahhs: Dirty Little Secrets

i have always been a little crazy when it comes to design and aesthetics. my friends used to roll their eyes when i would go on a tirade about about ugly underwear. don't wear them was my message. oh, have times have changed... currently wearing a sleeping bra from my nursing days!

when henry was first born my mom took me shopping and she filled up a cart with all sorts of crazy plastic baby toys. my husband (thank god he is on board!) and i just looked at her and said "we are not ready." she was so annoyed with us--and totally didn't understand. since then i have mellow a bit, but we still have our standards.

that brings me to the ugliest/most awesome gift henry received: the cloud b nightlight sea turtle. when we opened it on christmas i thought, "oh that is going in the closet." so ugly, i won't even post a photo of here!! i soon realized that this nightlight is great. it projects stars--in two colors--all over the ceiling and walls at night time. i put it on, say night night and close the door. henry loves it.

it got me wondering....do you have a beloved eyesore?

  1. I know what you mean, we got so much stuff when the babies were born that nobody ever wore and played with...soemtimes I felt guilty to throw things... but I just cannot... cannot...
I tried but my kids looked like they are not mine :)

  2. We got that same turtle as a gift as well. There is actually a version that is more simplified and slightly less of an eyesore:

  3. Oh yeah!!! I have parents who are the same about toy aesthetics so when we were staying with them for a couple weeks last summer and I brought home a Dora the Explorer all plastic huge dollhouse with all the rooms furniture they were not pleased!! I got it for 30 bucks at a garage sale and it was worth every penny. My 6 yr old played with it for HOURS - so much so that I brought it back at my last visit. She loves that thing and it's totally worth it for all the independant play she gets out of it!!! But don't get me wrong I love beautiful toys too... I jut find it amazing that kids always tend towards the garish worst color plastic things....

  4. I can totally relate. My son is only 14 weeks old and I am (er, was) trying desperately to avoid the deadly P's... plastic, primary (colors), and plush polyester (stuffed animals). When he wasn't sleeping well I gave in to the suggestion from some of my other mom friends and got him a Fisher-Price musical seahorse. He loves the damn thing. Oh well. You've got to pick your battles, right?
