Ahhs: Sun Spray for Kids

i am serious about protecting my kids from the sun, but trying to wrestle two active little ones to sit still for a good five minutes while i slather thick white cream over their sandy wet skin, then repeat every couple of hours, is pretty much impossible. thankfully, there are loads of great sun sprays for kids on the market now! so before you take off for the 4th of july weekend stock up on some of these faves....
(from left) 1. neutrogena- wet skin: it goes on wet skin for extra fast applying 2. supergoop- enriched with vitamins 3. honest just released a new spray version on their awesome sunblock 4. sun bum--eco and delicious 5. coola- organic and no nano-sized particles 6. babyganics-  you gotta pump this one, but it's tear free, which i love!

Ahhs: Ella Lou Playmats {Holiday Gift Guide}

looking for the perfect gift for your little one? well it came in the mail this week for us. it is the new wanderlust playmat from the san francisco-based design shop ella lou. these gorgeous mats let little ones explore either san francisco or, in our case, new york with roads, bridges and landmarks of the city as the canvas for endless imagination.

each mat is hand drawn and printed in san francisco with water-based non-toxic inks on eco-friendly organic cotton/hemp/recycled poly canvas. these are durable, washable, super stylish and they don't hurt when stepped on--this might be the perfect gift for mama too! buy exclusively at  e l l a   l o u

the second we rolled this mat out henry was glued to it. he pointed out the guggenheim, the library and brooklyn bridge, then the action started... crashing cars into the water, traffic jams, helicopter rescues, his sister became a godzilla baby that crushed his rescue attempts... and so on.

Books to Coo About: Christmas Books

our family has the tradition of opening a present on christmas eve- does yours? the best gift to open for me was always a fresh pair of christmas jammies and a book to read with my parents. here are two new books that we have already fell in love with over here.

the night before christmas (little brown 2013/originally published in 1978)
clement c. moore's timeless classic comes alive in this edition by acclaimed watercolorist holly hobbie. the warm illustrations draw little ones in and capture the magic of this special night. b u y  h e r e

bugs at christmas (phaidon 2013)

i adore this series written and illustrated by beatrice alemagna, who uses a totally unique style of texture, appliqué and collage for her books. in the christmas edition, the bugs have gathered to plan the festivities but each of these independent thinkers has their own idea of how the partying should go down—sound familiar?  super fun and sweet! b u y  h e r e

Holiday Gift Guide: Christmas Jammies

i take christmas jammies seriously. christmas morning photos are classic: messy hair. the look of pure joy and delight on your face. your mom (in my case) looking super 70s in the background. and snuggly pj's. and in my family, we usually end up wearing our special jammies (that we open on christmas eve of course) all day on the 25th. so here are some picture perfect picks for little ones...

Fashion Coos: Sugar on Snow {Holiday Edition}

when it comes to holiday outfits for the kids, i tend to go for less sparkle and glitz and more for old world formal. think peter pan collars, wool pants, tailored jackets, mary janes and oxfords. that said, i use the rule of thumb that party wear must also be versatile enough for everyday wear-- for my kids and my own wardrobe.

festive versatility is abound at sugar on snow. if you don’t know the shop, it’s a current obsession of mine since they carry a lot of my favorite brands that were never available in the us till now. brands like nathalie verlinden shoes (to. die. for.) wooly rompers by fub, and handknit sweaters that will give grandma a run for her money by lilly marthe ebener.

adela is debuting her new thanksgiving outfit this week, while we are camped out in cold, rainy texas. she is wearing the ketiketa bolero sweater in the most scrumptious red, paired with classic black t-straps by nathalie verlinden. both of these items are special enough to dress up any outfit, yet we will get a lot of mileage out of them. s h o p  s u g a r  on  s n o w

Fashion Coos: Easy Peasy Shoes {Holiday Edition}

to continue my series on holiday outfit ideas, i wanted to post a quickie about my favorite shoes for kids--they aren't cheap, but so cute, soft and eco-fab that they are worth every penny. these french shoes by easy peasy are hard to track down in the us, but one of my favorite shops shak-shuka stocks them and ships to the us. they will make any outfit for the holidays shine!  s h o p  e a s y  p e a s y

Fashion Coos: No Added Sugar {Holiday Edition}

sugar and spice and everything nice is as the saying goes, but no added sugar modified the recipe to be heavy on spice. the uk-based label creates high-end pieces that push the definition of classic with unexpected details and exceptional quality.

i am often torn between my love of traditional children’s looks and more edgy ensembles, but with no added sugar, i can have my cake and eat it too! take for example, the wild iris dress (pictured) featuring a heritage paisley print, but on closer inspection, the pattern is digitalized and ribbed cuffs are added to the sleeves. the result? a truly unique piece.

other looks include knit fairisle rompers with their signature bunny print and color pops—perfect for the holidays! i am also wild about their beautiful chuckleberry plaid dress and pants, mariniere -style stripes, and definitely not your grandma’s idea of holiday sweaters.

Books to Coo About Holiday Edition

first of all this photo does not do the book justice. i tried to photograph it myself but it wasn't looking much better. follow the star is a gorgeous pop-up book that tells the story of the bethlehem star. the intircate diorama-style format welcomes little ones eyes to follow the star that shines every year during this special season all over the world! buy it at books to coos about!

another beautiful christmas book is the story of christmas, also a biblical tale. pamela dalton's intricate scissor-cut illustrations wonderfully illuminate this classic story of the nativity. my son and i love to thumb through the pages and pick out the tiny details in each spread. buy it at books to coos about!

Books to Coo About Holiday Edition: Christmas Eve at the Mellops'

since this is the first year henry can really understand what christmas is, it is fun to read christmas books to him so he knows what to expect. in the next couple of weeks i'll be posting some new books that are sure to become holiday classics.

christmas eve at the mellops' was originally published in 1978 in german. you can see it has a vintage european feel--that i love! the illustrations are quirky and sweet with a story filled with all the love, drama and delight of the holiday season! my favorite line "the mellops' hall was filled with trees and tears." sounds like my family!
